Christopher Newport Men's Golf Captures Alvernia Fall Invitational Championship With 27-Over 603

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- Four Captains finished in the top ten as the Christopher Newport men's golf team rolled to a 19-stroke victory at the Alvernia Fall Invitational this week. CNU finished out the 36-hole event with a 603 (297-306) while Michael Thomas (+2) snagged second, Owen Cook (+7) tied for third, Nick Alexander (+8) in fifth, and Stephen Patterson (+10) in seventh place.

For the second day in a row, all four counting scorers were sub-80 for the Captains as Nick Alexander put together the finest second round showing for CNU. He finished day two with a three-over 75 (36-39) and poured in three birdies with 10 pars.

As a team, the Captains extended their first-round lead by the end of the second round and closed out a dominant victory by nearly 20 strokes. Playing the 6,687-yard par 72 track at Bulle Rock Golf Course, the Captains earned the first team tournament win since April 18, 2023 when they closed out the Glen Heath Memorial on top.

Michael Thomas secured runner-up laurels with a four-over 76 on day two and wrapped up the two-day event at two-over par with a 146 (70-76). He had an up-and-down round but finished the day with five birdies and six pars on day two. Only Peyton Mussina from Penn College posted a better tournament finish with a two-under 142. Thomas secured second by five strokes ahead of Shawn Williams (Alvernia) and his teammate, Owen Cook

Cook locked in a season-best finish with a tie for third place in 151 (75-76) strokes. On Wednesday, the senior from Purcellville, Va. recorded a team-high 12 pars while also adding a birdie four on the 596-yard par five 11th hole.

Stephen Patterson also had an outstanding front nine, finishing at Even par at the turn with seven pars and one birdie. He knocked in a birdie on the 175-yard par three 7th before adding four more pars on the back nine. Patterson signed for a 79 (36-43) on day two and had sole possession of seventh place for his first career top-ten showing.

Rookie Brian O'Dea finished in 32nd place with a 167 (77-90) to wrap up a 23-over par tournament.

Christopher Newport will close out the Fall season at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial on October 28-29. The tournament will be played at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, North Carolina.
