CNU Senior Alex Price Named Division III PING First Team All-American Becoming First Four-Time Selection in Program History

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. -- The most decorated golfer in Christopher Newport athletics history added the exclamation point to his illustrious career on Friday evening when the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Alex Price was again selected as a Division III PING First Team All-American. Price becomes the first four-time All-American in program history and the first player to twice earn first team honors.

Price has continuously established himself as one of the best male athletes in CNU Athletics history and joins an elite grouping of only six Captains outside of track and field to garner All-American plaudits all four years of their career. Price matched the standard set by Abby Hogge (Volleyball), Dylan Rice (Men's Lacrosse), Chelsie Schweers (Women's Basketball), Eric Shulman (Men's Tennis), and Max Wayne (Men's Lacrosse) before him. Among them, only Schweers and Price were multiple First Team honorees.

A record-setting athlete from his first year on, the Captains' legend saved his best for last with one of the most incredible seasons in Division III golf history. The list of accomplishments over the course of his career is gargantuan and the left-handed swinger etched his name in the record books time and time again. As a senior, he was the top-ranked Division III golfer by a significant margin, outpacing the second-ranked player by just a hair shy of two full strokes on the GolfStat.com Player Rankings with an adjusted scoring average of 69.60.

His magical season culminated in a personal best finish at the 2023 NCAA Division III National Championships, where he tied for second in the field of 221 players. He shattered the program record for a 72-hole tournament with a 282 (69-71-75-67), which included a dominating final round, with a five-under 67, that stands as the finest postseason performance and one of the top-five single rounds in program history. With his teammate Robb Kinder, Price became the first CNU player to shoot under par in a 72-hole tournament, finishing with a spectacular six-under showing at the Keene Trace Golf Club in the 2023 postseason event.

The finish marked the eighth top-five effort in nine total events played in the 2022-23 season, including three wins and two runner-up finishes. Price dominated the NCAA Division III Fall Preview with a 209 (-7) to pick up his first win of the season and then cruised through the spring season with wins at the Jekyll Island Collegiate with a 202 (-14), re-setting his own program scoring record for a 54-hole tournament, and at the Camp Lejeune Championship with a 208 (-8).

Price played in 26 rounds during his senior season and was at par or better in 21 of them. He wrapped up his senior season with a 69.96 scoring average, absolutely obliterating his own record 72.6 from a year ago by nearly three full strokes per round. He owns three of the top-six single season scoring marks and would have a fourth if his first year was not shortened to just nine rounds due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. Price dropped his program scoring average for a career to 71.71 over 73.5 rounds played in his tenure and inserted himself in the top-ten all-time in career tournament victories.

The first team All-American certificate adds to an ongoing list of individual accolades for Price. He was named to the 2020 National All-Freshman Team, is a four-time All-Region and All-State selection, and was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List. A quarterfinalist at the 2022 U.S. Amateur, Price was also named to the prestigious Palmer Cup team as the lone non-Division I player.

He is joined on the PING First Team All-American list by seven players from around the country including a pair from Emory and a couple from Piedmont. Single players from Methodist, Texas-Dallas, and Guilford were also recognized.
