Truxtun Umsted
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- This weekend, the Christopher Newport sailing team saw action in a pair of regattas including a third-place showing at The Grant in New York and a 14th-place effort at the Truxtun Umsted in Maryland. The Captains sailed in eight races at Stony Brook for a third place showing and the weather only allowed for eight in Annapolis for the 14th-place effort.
CNU was led by the B division boat at The Grant, as Joshua Bendura and
Gail Schneider captured a second-place showing. The Captains' duo was just one point shy of tying for the division title, scoring 27 points behind winning Princeton with 26. In eight completed races, Bendura and Schneider sailed to a pair of wins and six top-five finishes including a runner-up race to end the regatta.
The A division boat was sailed by
Brian Fox and
Sebastian Beavers, finishing with 27 points as well, good for fourth in division. The Captains' tandem bounced back after an eighth-place showing to start with seven straight top-five efforts. Fox and Beavers finished strong with a first and second place effort in the final rotation.
As a team, CNU scored 54 points in The Grant, taking third place by 18 points and trailing second place Drexel by just four. Princeton won the event with 48 points.
Down the East Coast at the Naval Academy, the Captains finished 14th at the Truxtun Umsted.
Aston Atherton sailed with
Grace Keene in A division and
David Grace partnered with
Kiara Templeton in B division for the weekend. Atherton and Keene scored 108 points and the B division duo sailed to a 101 point finish.
As a team, the Captains finished with 209 points.
Finishing out the Spring schedule next weekend, the Captains will take on the field at the MAISA Spring Women's and the BDC Open Fleet Race.
