HAMPTON, Va. --Â The Christopher Newport sailing team opened the spring season at home, hosting the 2023 Hanbury Trophy in Hampton, Va. Princeton Unviersity (102 pts) won the regatta and the host Captains finished sixth with 169 total points.Â
CNU also captured a 10th place finish with their second team, scoring 280 points to place two teams in the top-ten amongst the 14-team fleet. Ten races were finished on the first day and the remaining four were completed on Sunday.Â
In A division, the Captains top team featured senior
Brian Fox and rookie
Sebastian Beavers as the tandem scored 76 points for a top-five finish. The home town team opened with a bang, picking up the first of two bullets in the 14-race event while also winning in the sixth race on Saturday. Overall, Fox and Beavers never finished outside of the top ten and recorded six top-five finishes.Â
The B division boat finished eighth with 93 points as rookie Joshua Bendura paired with sophomore
Gail Schneider for all 14 races. The duo snagged five top-five finishes and ended the event with their best finish, a second-place showing in race number 14.Â
CNU also entered a second team that was led by A division sailors
Laura Smith and
Kiara Templeton (139 pts - 10th place) and B division sailors
Grace Watlington and
Ellie McFall (141 pts - 12th place).Â
