BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- On the first day of the NCAA Indoor National Championships,
Alyssa Roach secured All-American honors in the long jump and added another top-flight effort in the pentathlon while starring for the Christopher Newport track & field program on Friday afternoon at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama.
Putting on a show while competing against the top student-athletes in the nation, Roach was electric while navigating a grueling schedule that saw her simultaneously compete in a pair of events. Despite the demanding slate, she eventually finished eighth in the nation in the long jump and 14th in the pentathlon.
In the long jump, she collected All-American accolades after landing a distance of 5.57 meters on her second attempt. With that performance, she became the 12th standout in school history to earn national recognition in the women's indoor long jump and the first since Marquitta Mines placed third in 2005. It also marked the second-best effort by a Captain at the national meet in the past two decades, trailing only Mines' 5.67-meter showcase.
At the same time she was earning national plaudits in the long jump, Roach was also excelling in the pentathlon. Headlining her work in the combined event, she posted a time of 9.04 in the 60-hurdles, which marked her top clocking of the year and the second-best mark of her decorated tenure.
Along with her performance in the 60-hurdles, she continued to shine in the long jump as well. During the pentathlon, she landed a distance of 5.47 meters, which placed her fifth in the field. Additionally, Roach cleared 1.49 meters in the high jump, fired an 8.76-meter launch in the shot put, and wrapped up the 800 in 2:31.17.
Overall, Roach finished with 3,330 points in the pentathlon. That marked the highest score by a Captain at the NCAA Championships since Enuma Ezenwa and Jennifer Westerholm eclipsed that total at the 2015 title meet.
Christopher Newport will wrap up the NCAA Championships on Saturday with a pair of competitors. CJ Reeders will take part in the triple jump at 2 p.m., while Wade Dunkelberger will head out for the high jump beginning at 3:45 p.m.
