NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season on Friday with the first of three days of action at the 2022 CNU Fall Invite. The Captains took on Division I Hampton University in a mock dual format with sophomore
Raine Weis headlining the action with a pair of wins for CNU.
Weis scored wins over Division I competition in both singles and doubles on Friday to start her second season on the right foot. The second-year player from Ashland, Va. paired with junior
Tessa Trate to earn an 8-6 doubles win over Mio Kozaki and Diana Starodubtseva in doubles play before moving into singles and capturing a straight-set victory over Sofia Sokolova (6-3, 6-1).
CNU also got a win from
Megan Bauer on line No. 6 where she took on Hampton sophomore Zoe Walker. Bauer edged out Walker in the first set before blowing past the Pirates opponent in the second set for a final score victory of 7-6 (6), 6-1.
Rookie
Eva Taylor made her collegiate debut on the first day of the CNU Invite while senior
Kendra Womack and junior
Logan Glen also competed in singles play. In pairs action, Taylor played with
Kiersten Chang while Bauer joined
Anna Campbell on the court for the first matches of the season.
The Captains will return to the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts on Saturday and again on Sunday to continue play at the CNU Invite.
