NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a third-place finish at the James River Country Club sectional qualifier in Newport News, Christopher Newport senior golfer
Alex Price has qualified for the 122nd United States Amateur Championship.
Price fired back-to-back 67's in the sectional to finish at six-under par and edge out three players at five-under for the final qualifying spot. He is joined by Radford senior Patrick Gareiss (-8) and Duke University sophomore Kelly Chinn (-7) as the three players advancing to the U.S. Amateur through the event.
On Tuesday, Price worked around a pair of early bogeys to rally with three birdies in a four-hole stretch at the turn. He added another birdie two on the Par 3 15th hole to finish the round three-under with a 67. In Wednesday's final round, Price caught fire early with three birdies in the first eight holes as he surged to the top of the leaderboard. After a bogey on nine, he picked that stroke right back up with a birdie on ten and played clean even golf over the final eight holes to secure his spot.
This event was the final sectional qualifier after a total of 94 sites hosted events across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 122nd U.S. Amateur will be played at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. from August 15-21.
