Captains Finish 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships With 17th Place Showing

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- The No. 7-ranked Christopher Newport men's golf team concluded play at the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships on Friday afternoon, finishing with a 17th-place showing. The Captains wrapped up the second highest finish for Christopher Newport since 2012.

Leading the way for the Captains' fourth-round was junior Robb Kinder (+11) with a one-over 73 to wrap up the 72-hole tournament tied for 24th. After finishing tied for second in last year's tournament, Kinder backed up that performance with another top-25 effort with a 298 (74-72-79-73).

Kinder is only the second CNU player in program history to record multiple sub-300 rounds at the NCAA National Championship event, and the first since Scott Scovil accomplished the feat in the 1994 and 1996 tournaments. Kinder is the first to do it in back-to-back tournament appearances.

On Friday, Kinder put together one of the finest rounds in NCAA Tournament history for Christopher Newport, firing 17 pars and one bogey for the one-over 73. His terrific showing on Friday pushed him to finish as the tournament leader in total pars with 50 out of the 72 holes played. He now has five rounds at 73 or better in his last seven played in the championship-level event.

As a team, the Captains finished with a 306 in Friday's fourth round, good for the second best finish of the week as a team. CNU wrapped up the tournament with an 80-over par 1,228 (311-301-310-306) to wrap up the tournament with a 17th-place showing. The Captains made the cut for just the second time since 2012.

In Friday's final round, Alex Price and Aidan Baron each signed for five-over 77's, matching their team-leading showing in the third round. Price sank three more birdie putts to take the team lead for the 72-hole tournament with 11 under par holes. He had a stellar stretch in the middle of the round with three birdies and a par in four holes (16-18, 1). Baron added one birdie and put in 11 pars to finish with his second straight 77.

Price tied for 63rd with a 22-over 309 (80-75-77-77) and Baron tied for 77th with a 26-over 313 (81-78-77-77).

Jack Gessaman rounded out the counting scores for CNU on Friday with a seven-over 79. He matched Price with three birdies and added seven pars. He was just one-over through the first nine holes in the round before slipping back to a tie for 59th overall with a 308 (76-76-77-79).

Finally, Carrter Morris rounded out the Captains' championship showing with a 351 (81-85-92-93). He chipped in his opening round score with an 81 and closed out the week with six more pars.

Methodist University (+20) captured the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship and the Monarchs No. 1, Andre Chi (-4), won individual medalist honors.
