Top Five Finish for Shreya Ganta Highlights CNU Women's Golf Effort at Savannah Invitational

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Senior Shreya Ganta made Christopher Newport women's golf history after firing a career-best 71 for the first under par round of her career on Tuesday, leading the Captains at the 2022 Savannah Invitational. Four of the five Captains improved their score on the second day as CNU finished out the event tied for eighth as a team.

Ganta bested her previous career low of 72 set in the 2021 VSGA Intercollegiate when she was even par for the day. In Tuesday's second round of the Savannah Intercollegiate, the Ashburn, Va. native recorded just the third round under par in program history with her record-breaking performance. She posted the third lowest round in the tournament on Tuesday and moved up into a tie for fourth.

In the 36-hole event, Ganta signed for a 147 (76-71) to finish nine strokes behind individual medalist Rylee Suttor (Centre). Ganta led the tournament in total birdies with nine and added 18 birdies to finish at par or better in 27 of the 36 holes played. She sank five birdies on Tuesday, including a terrific flourish at the end of her round to get under par. Sitting at one-over through 16 holes, the Captains' veteran poured in a four on the 451-yard Par 5 17th and then dropped a three on the 349-yard Par 4 18th.

She carded the first round under par for the CNU Women's Golf team since the second year of the program in 2018-19 when Erica Whitehouse accomplished the feat twice at the Bridgewater Fall Invitational (-2; 70) and at the Max & Susan Stith Invitational (-1; 71). Ganta tied Whitehouse' team record for lowest 36-hole tournament score with a 147 and also matched the mark in relation to par (+3).

In addition to the historical showcase put on by Ganta, the rest of the team had strong performances on Tuesday as well. All five starters improved their first-round score by an average of 6.6 strokes. Lauren Sims finished tied for 25th on the individual leaderboard after firing a 76 on day two to wrap up the event with a 156 (80-76). Elena Rezac matched her first round 83 to finish tied for 42nd with a 166 (83-83), and rounding out the counting scores for CNU on Tuesday was Cameron Marshall with a 91. Marshall shaved 21 strokes off her first-round score to finish with a 203 (112-91).

As a team, CNU shot a 657 (336-321) and tied Lynchburg on the leaderboard. The Captains will take the course next at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate from March 18-20.
