FOREST, Va. -- Earning the first win of the 2025-26 season in the final regular season event of the year, the Christopher Newport women's golf team fired a 55-over 631 (317-314) to win the 7th Annual VSGA Women's Intercollegiate Championship. The Captains won by 26 strokes over the University of Lynchburg and placed four of the top five finishers in the event.
Separated by just four strokes, the Captains were led by
Gabi McGehee (+13), finishing second,
Maddie Cameron (+14) and
Julia Pelletier (+14) tied for third, and
Taylor Davis (+16) in fifth place.
Five more CNU players finished in the top-14 in the tournament in an impressive showing of dominance by the Captains.
Katie Watson (+19) and
Sara McCaskill (+19) tied for seventh with matching 84's on day two.
Cassie Sengul (+22) finished 11th and
Maggie Umphlet (+32) wrapped up the 36-hole event with a strong performance to end in 14th place.
Christopher Newport won the VSGA Women's Intercollegiate for the fourth time, adding to trophies from the 2019, 2021, and 2025 editions of the event.
In Tuesday's second round at the London Downs Golf Club,
Maddie Cameron fired the best round of the day with a five-over 77. Cameron dropped in 13 pars and tied medalist Lily Rowe (Lynchburg) for the best single round score of the tournament.
McGehee paired two sub-80 rounds together to finish second and closed out the event just one stroke behind Rowe. She fired a 157 (79-78) over two rounds including a birdie on No. 4 and 13 pars in the second round. Pelletier sank a pair of birdies in Monday's opening round and wrapped up the two-day event with a 158 (79-79). She had 11 pars on Tuesday.
Rounding out the starting five for Christopher Newport was
Taylor Davis and
Katie Watson. Davis finished with two birdies in the event including one on No. 12 in Tuesday's second round. She fired a 160 (80-80) and captured a top-five finish. Watson had 21 pars over 36 holes and wrapped up the two-day event with a 163 (79-84).
The remaining three players, entered in the event as individuals, were right behind their CNU teammates.
Sara McCaskill fired a 163 (79-84),
Cassie Sengul had a 166 (85-81), and
Maggie Umphlet finished with a 176 (85-91).
