WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's golf team opened up a 25-stroke lead after the first round of the 2022 Glenn Heath Memorial golf tournament on Monday afternoon and will look to close out the tournament with a strong second round on Tuesday. The Captains (+5) shot a 293 over the first 18 holes and lead Campbellsville-Harrisonburg (+30) heading into the final round.
Staking themselves to an impressive opening round lead, the Captains also secured the top-three spots on the individual leaderboard.
Alex Price (E) and
Robb Kinder (E) are tied for the lead with matching 72's and
Jackson Gessaman (+1) is just one stroke back in sole possession of third place with a 73.
All five of CNU's starters are in the top-20 on the player leaderboard with
Aidan Baron (+4) tied for fourth after an opening round 76 and
Carrter Morris (+10) is tied for 16th with an 82.
CNU also entered three individuals into the event.
Michael Thomas (+8) is tied for 14th and
Drew Parr (+11) also secured a spot in the top-20 after round one and is tied for 20th overall. Rounding out the Captains' day was
Bobby Stribling (+18) with a 90 over the first 18 holes.
The field includes 62 players from 10 different schools. Behind Campbellsville-Harrisonburg sits Roanoke College (+37) in third, Hampden-Sydney (+41) in fourth and Southern Virginia (+51) rounding out the top five. The teams will return to the course at the Williamsburg Club on Tuesday to wrap up the 36-hole event played on the 6,822-yard layout.
