JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Christopher Newport women's golf sits in 21st at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate after two rounds of play in Georgia, led by veterans
Lauren Sims (+2) and
Shreya Ganta (+6). The pair scored matching 74's on day two to help pace the Captains overall effort.
After an impressive Even par first round, Sims worked her way around the track again on Saturday for a two-over 74. She continues to pour in pars and now has 26 even holes through the first two rounds. In the second round, she sank 14 pars while adding a birdie on the 451-yard Par 5 17th hole.
Sims is sitting in a three-way tie for 10th just nine strokes off the pace set by Centre College's Rylee Suttor. Suttor led the tournament with a three-under 69 on Saturday.
Shreya Ganta shaved two strokes off her first round score to move into the top-30 on the scoreboard in a tie for 29th. Ganta finished her round strong with a run of seven straight pars followed by a birdie on her last hole, the 330-yard Par 4 9th. She also birdied her first hole of the day and rallied from a double bogey with a par-birdie-par-par run on the front.
Rookie
Elena Rezac surged up the bard as well by cutting eight strokes off her first round score. She finished day two with an 11-over 83 and recorded two birdies in her round.
Hannah Bristow chipped in the final scoring card of the day with a 96 while
Cameron Marshall was one stroke back with a 97.
Christopher Newport leads Piedmont by 18 strokes heading into the final round on Sunday. The Captains are well within striking distance of a top-15 showing in one of the deepest fields of the year. CNU will tee off in the third and final round starting a 8:55 a.m. on Sunday with Birmingham-Southern and Bridgewater.
