Women's Results // Men's Results
SALISBURY, Md. -- Setting fire to the program record books, the Christopher Newport cross country teams put together a series of historic efforts while shining at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Maryland.
During the league meet, over a dozen Captains added marks to the school's all-time performance lists, including incredible showings by
Nathanael Ferrante and
Madi Rawlings. Aided by those efforts, both the men and women placed second in the final team standings. The men recorded a score of 51, which trailed UC Santa Cruz by 30. Meanwhile, the women accumulated 49 points, 31 shy of the Banana Slugs.
On the women's side, Rawlings finished third in the 6k with a time of 21:53.4. That cut over a minute off her previous PR and marked the second-fastest clocking in school history.
Lex McGrail also moved into the top-10 on the school's all-time charts after finishing eighth in 22:21.6. That bumped her to 10th on the program leaderboard and shaved 80 seconds off her personal-best time.
Along with Rawlings and McGrail, who both earned first-team All-Conference laurels for their work,
Eliza Dana and
Mae Savoie also nabbed second-team All-League plaudits. Dana finished 10th in 22:28.4, while Savoie was 15th in 22:59.5. Those marks rank 12th and 19th in program history.
Following the award-winners,
Megan Smith rounded out the top-five on Saturday after the first-year speedster clocked in at 23:16.1, which moved her to 27th in school lore. Just over a second later,
Claire Garster wrapped up the race in 23:17.6, marking the 28th-best effort by a Captain.
Three other standouts also eclipsed the 24-minute mark during the race.
Libby Miles finished in 23:54.6,
Allyson Castle crossed in 23:58.7, and
McKenzie Hurley rounded out the group in 23:59.2. With those efforts, Christopher Newport now has 42 total runners that have broken 24 minutes in the 6k.
Not to be overlooked, the men also had a slew of top-flight performances.
Nathanael Ferrante was the runner-up in the 8k with a time of 24:26.1. That not only moved him to fourth on the program's all-time charts, but it also marked the top effort by a Captain in a league championship race. His clocking shattered Grayson Reid's time of 24:46.3, which the former All-American posted at the 2017 conference competition.
Moments after Nathanael crossed the line,
Daniel Ferrante finished fifth in 24:32.2. That moved him to fifth on Christopher Newport's all-time 8k performance list. Following the twins, who both garnered first-team All-Conference nods for their work,
John Vogel hauled in a second-team citation after placing 15th in 25:29.9.
Rounding out the history-makers on Saturday,
Luke Hawkins and
Nick Tolarchyk added memorable efforts as well. Hawkins finished 17th in 25:42.6, which ranks 29th in program history. Shortly thereafter, Tolarchyk came in with a 25:46.3 clocking. That stands 31st on the all-time list.
Capping off the team's top-seven runners,
Luke Tompkins was 24th in 26:47.1, and
Cooper Albright finished 25th in 26:47.6.
With the league meet in the books, the Captains will now turn their attention to the NCAA South Regionals, which will take place at Lee Hall Mansion on November 12.
