Christopher Newport Cross Country Pieces Together Strong Performance at Spider Alumni Open

Final Results

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. --
Facing some of the top runners in Virginia, the Christopher Newport cross country teams held their own against the elite competition and pieced together a strong showing at the Spider Alumni Open on Saturday morning at Pole Green Park.

During the competition, which featured representatives from some of the top universities in the state, the men placed third in the final team standings, while the women came in fifth. Both squads were also the top Division III teams at the meet as the men trailed only Virginia and Richmond, while the women finished just behind Virginia, Richmond, James Madison, and George Mason.

On an individual level, Clark Edwards came in 16th in the men's 5k after completing the course in 15:33.6. Just two seconds later, Daniel Ferrante and Ryan Henderson both crossed in 15:35.5. With his clocking, Henderson shaved 70 seconds off his previous 5k best of 16:45.5, which was set in 2019 at the Mary Washington Opener.

Equally impressive, Sam Koltisko, Nick Tolarchyk, and Eric Speeney also posted personal-best clockings in the 5k. Koltisko finished 27th with a 15:44.5 mark, while Tolarchyk was 30th in 15:46.3. Both of those times were over 50 seconds faster than their top effort from two years ago. Meanwhile, Speeney finished in 16:02.2, which was a 34-second improvement over his time from the UMW Opener.

In addition to the veterans, Nathanael Ferrante placed 21st in the field and was the fourth-fastest Captain with a 15:36.2 mark. Meanwhile, Luke Miller also landed in the squad's top-seven after crossing in 15:45.8. That placed him 29th overall.

On the women's side, Logan Funk led the way and was the top Division III finisher in the two-mile run after crossing in 11:48.5. That placed her 25th among all runners on Saturday. Meanwhile, Madi Rawlings was 40th in 12:18.4, Eliza Dana came in 42nd in 12:22.1, and Maggie Ralston placed 45th in 12:24.8.

Rounding out the squad's top-five, Michelle Valcich was 53rd overall in 12:45.4.

Among other competitors on Saturday, Libby Miles finished 59th with a time of 12:59.0, while Lex McGrail made a solid debut and completed the race in 13:02.8. Seconds later, three other runners crossed within moments of each other. Forming a tight pack, Claire Garster was 64th in 13:06.4, Bella Gesick was 65th in 13:08.7, and Isabel Hogg was 66th in 13:09.3.

Christopher Newport will return to action on September 18 when the Captains host the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion.
