NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams will return to action on Saturday morning when the Captains host the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion.
The competition, which is expected to draw 150 runners from around the region, will begin with the women's 6k at 10 a.m. The men will head out for the 8k at 10:45 a.m.
For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results will be available at CNUsports.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Seven schools are expected to send competitors to Saturday's meet. Along with the Captains, fellow Coast-to-Coast Conference members Mary Washington and Salisbury will have representatives at the competition. Additionally, Eastern Mennonite, Marymount, Regent, and Virginia Wesleyan are also scheduled to take part in both races this weekend.
Entering the meet, Christopher Newport remains highly rated in the latest USTFCCCA South Region rankings. After kicking off the year slotted fourth in the preseason polls, both the men and women continued to hold down that spot in the organization's first regular season rankings, which were announced earlier this week.
In their first action of the season,
Logan Funk and
Clark Edwards guided the Captains to a strong showing at the Spider Alumni Open with a pair of award-winning efforts. During the meet on September 4, Funk led all Division III competitors in the women's two-mile run with a time of 11:48.5, while Edwards paced the men with a 15:33.6 clocking in the 5k.
For their work during that meet, Edwards and Funk swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week awards.
In addition to the decorated pair,
Daniel Ferrante,
Ryan Henderson, and
Nathanael Ferrante all notched top-25 finishes on the men's side. Meanwhile, Funk was joined in the top-50 by
Madi Rawlings,
Eliza Dana, and
Maggie Ralston.
Saturday's meet will mark Christopher Newport's first appearance at Lee Hall Mansion since hosting the CNU Invitational on October 12, 2019. During the most recent competition at the course, current junior
Libby Miles placed seventh in the field, while Ralston came in 10th in the women's 6k. Meanwhile, senior
Brenton Duvall finished 13th in the men's 8k in 2019 after crossing the line in 28:26.59.
Following the home meet, Christopher Newport will return to action on October 1 when the Captains head to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.
