Christopher Newport Men's Golf Earns NCAA Division III Championship At-Large Berth

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- For the first time since 2017 and the fifth time overall under head coach Jamie Coleman, the Christopher Newport men's golf program will head to the National Championship Tournament. The NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee has announced the teams and individuals selected to participate in the 2021 Championships, including the Captains as a Pool B selection.

The championships will be held May 11-14 at Oglebay in Wheeling, W. Va. and hosted by Bethany College and the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes of play. Thirty-seven teams and six individuals not on one of those teams were selected to compete; after 36 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams.

A total of 191 participants will compete at the 2021 championships. Thirty conferences awarded an automatic qualifier and four teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions and programs that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. Christopher Newport slotted in as one of the four teams in Pool B in the 2021 season.

A comprehensive COVID-19 testing process will be conducted at the championships site for the 2021 Division III Men's Golf Championships. Prior to the practice round on Monday, May 10, the NCAA will present the Elite 90 Award to the competitor with the highest cumulative GPA in the tournament.

Practice rounds will be played on the two days prior to first round action getting underway on Tuesday, May 11. The teams will play on two different courses on the first two days, seeing action on the Palmer and the Jones Courses at the Oglebay Resort. The Jones Course plays as a 6,857-yard Par 71 while the Palmer Course is 6,621 yards and a Par 70.

Tee times for the opening round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Spectators will be permitted and admission to the event is free for practice and competition rounds. For fans unable to attend, live scoring will be used throughout the tournament on Golfstat.com.

Christopher Newport is making the team's fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the 13-year tenure of Coach Jamie Coleman. The Captains' best finish under Coleman was an 11th-place effort in 2011 while the program's best ever finish was a ninth place showing in 1996. This year, the Captains are ranked No. 18 in the final Bushnell Golfweek Coaches' Poll and are led by sophomore Alex Price. The left-handed underclassman is averaging 73.1 this season with three top-ten finishes in four events played. Four more Captains have logged a sub-77.0 average this season including freshmen Aidan Baron and Carrter Morris (76.7).

The starting lineup will be announced prior to the Captains' trip to West Virginia this weekend. Stay tuned to CNUsports.com and follow @CNUathletics on Twitter and Instagram for more updates.
