JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Facing an extremely deep and talented field at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, the Christopher Newport men's golf team proved more than capable of hanging with the best team's in the nation this weekend with a seventh place showing. It was the best showing at Jekyll for the Captains since 2016 when All-American
Harry Nodwell led the Captains to a fifth place effort.
This weekend, Christopher Newport (+41) tied for seventh with 11th-ranked Greensboro College while outpacing No. 4 Carnegie Mellon (+43), No. 6 Hampden-Sydney (+46), and pair of teams from No. 16 Oglethorpe (+55 and +68). As a team, the Captains finished the 54-hole tournament in 905 strokes (295-300-310), once again featuring a tight grouping of scores for CNU in the third and final round.Â
Sophomore
Alex Price (+6) registered a top-20 individual performance as the lefty finished tied for 18th. Price logged a 73-74-75 showing in his second career 54-hole tournament for the Captains. His 222 was the finest three-day total for Christopher Newport by four strokes, but the top four scores for CNU were separated by a mere 10 strokes on the weekend.Â
Rookie
Aidan Baron (+10) tied for 38th with a 75-75-76;
Robb Kinder (+14) signed for a 75-75-80; and
Carrter Morris (+16) wrapped up his freshman showing at Jekyll with a 77-76-79. In addition to the strong weekend for the top four, senior
Kevin Quinto shot the low round for the Captains with a first-round 72. He wrapped up the tournament with a 238 (72-81-85).Â
Christopher Newport recorded 160 pars, ranking sixth in the tournament. That number was led by 36 from Price while Baron recorded 35, and Kinder 33. Price added seven birdies while suffering just 11 holes over par in the three rounds combined.Â
The competition won't get any lighter for the Captains as they will next travel to the Golfweek Invitational at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.. That 54-hole tournament will be played from April 2-4.Â
