NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will kick off the 2021-22 indoor campaign on Sunday when the Captains host the Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
Â
Action gets underway with the men's weight throw and long jump at 9:30 a.m. Track disciplines begin with the 60-hurdles at noon. Overall, 30 total events will take place during the all-day meet.
Â
For those fans unable to attend the competition, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Â
Over 40 Captains are currently scheduled to take part in the meet. Overall, Christopher Newport will be one of seven schools with representatives at the competition. The squad will be joined by fellow Coast-to-Coast Conference members Salisbury and Mary Washington along with Virginia Wesleyan, Methodist, Richmond, and Hampton.
Â
Sunday's meet will serve as the first indoor track & field competition for the Captains in over 630 days. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019-20 season was cut short before the national championships, while the 2020-21 indoor campaign was canceled before a single meet was held. Christopher Newport's last appearance at the Freeman Center came on March 1, 2020 with the final day of the CNU Qualifier and Combined Events.
Â
Although the indoor season was canceled last year, Christopher Newport returned for the outdoor campaign and swept the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championships. Among the returning standouts from that title meet,
Daniel Fox,
CJ Reeders, and
Alyssa Roach are all reigning champions in a pair of individual events. Reeders went on to earn All-American honors in the men's triple jump after placing seventh at the NCAA Championships, while Roach finished 17th in the nation in the women's 100-hurdles.
Â
Along with the decorated standouts from last year's outdoor squad, Christopher Newport also welcomes back an impressive contingent of standout performers from the university's most recent indoor team. Although it has been nearly two years since the Captains swept the 2020 indoor conference titles, over a dozen All-League performers are back from those championship squads. Among them, Roach, Reeders,
Allan Pedin and
Sam Koltisko are all reigning individual champions, while
Mae Savoie and
Adrianna DeSantis helped out on the victorious 4x400-relay.
Â
Following Sunday's meet, Christopher Newport will have a lengthy layoff before returning to action on January 15 with the Captains Invitational. Overall, the team is scheduled to host five indoor meets during the winter, including the Coast-to-Coast Championships, which will take place at the Freeman Center from February 18-19.
