MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -- Wrapping up the 54-hole Golfweek DIII Fall Invite in Florida, the Christopher Newport women's golf team posted four sub-80 rounds in the third and final trip around the Baytowne Golf Club and finished in 11th place. Senior
Shreya Ganta (+16) led the Captains with a four-over 76 on day three, concluding her three-day performance tied for 35th with a 232 (81-75-76).
Ganta closed out her tournament with a strong back nine on the final day, heading back to the clubhouse with a one-under 35 to finish at four-over par. She picked up back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 while sinking six pars.
Junior
Lauren Sims scored the finest individual performance in the tournament for the Captains, tied for 28th at 14-over. Sims signed for a 230 (80-72-78) and led the team with 35 total pars. That mark was just three behind the tournament leader with 38. In Tuesday's final round, Sims recovered from a four-over start through six holes to drop just two more strokes in the final 12. Her 78 was tied for the second best score of the day for the Captains in the final round.
She matched rookie
Elena Rezac, who fired one of her finest rounds of the season with a six-over 78 as well. The freshman from Arlington, Va. scored a team-high three birdies and finished the tournament tied for 50th with a +22 score of 238 (81-79-78).
Fellow freshman
Alex Delgado (+19) wrapped up her tournament appearance tied for 45th. She matched Rezac with three birdies in the final round while also adding eight pars. After a strong opening round, Delgado finished in the top half of the tournament leaderboard with a 235 (75-81-79).
Cameron Marshall registered eight pars in her 54-hole showing in Florida, including four Tuesday to help round out the Captains lineup at the Baytowne Golf Club. On Tuesday, she conquered holes 4, 6, and 15, including the 366-yard Par 4 sixth playing as the fourth toughest hole on the course. In the third round, she was one of only 43 players in the 110-player field to par the sixth hole.
As a team, the Captains fired a 935 (
317-307-311) to finished 71-over par and just two strokes back of a top-ten finish. Emory (+34) won the event by three over Centre College while the top-ten teams were separated by just 35 strokes.
