RICHMOND, Va. -- Former Christopher Newport cross country and track & field standout Will Bruner will take part in a 50-mile run on Saturday, May 16 in support of Mental Health Awareness Month while raising funds for The Jed Foundation.
Â
A 2017 graduate of Christopher Newport, Bruner will complete a five-mile loop along Grove and Patterson Avenues in Richmond. Beginning and ending his journey at St. Christopher's School, which was his high school alma mater, he plans to traverse the route 10 times during his daylong run.
Â
Bruner is participating in the event in honor of Quent Alcorn, a former high school teammate who lost his life in 2015. A previously scheduled "Climb for Quent" charity event for this summer was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so Bruner opted to hold a 50-mile run to help raise funds for The Jed Foundation.
Â
A non-profit organization, The Jed Foundation partners with high schools and colleges around the country to help strengthen their mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention programs. Equipping teens and young adults with the skills and knowledge to help themselves and others, the organization strives to protect emotional health while preventing suicide among the nation's youth.

During his career with the Captains, Bruner was a member of Christopher Newport's cross country dynasty, which won Capital Athletic Conference titles in 2015 and 2016 while advancing to back-to-back NCAA Championships, including an 11th-place showing at the 2016 meet. In addition to his work on the cross country squad, Bruner was also a conference champion as a member of the DMR during the 2015 indoor track & field campaign.
Â
Fittingly, several other Captains will be on hand during Bruner's run this Saturday to support their former teammate during his charitable endeavors.
