FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Jason Putnam has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after starring for Christopher Newport during the William & Mary Invitational on Friday evening at the Eastern State Course.
The weekly honor is the first for Putnam, who is a two-time All-Conference and All-Region performer during his decorated career with the Captains.
Making his season debut on Friday, the senior excelled in the 6k at William & Mary. During the race, Putnam threw down a time of 19:46.8, which placed him first among Division III competitors and ninth among all runners at the competition. That clocking also shaved 16 seconds off his previous PR, which he established at the same meet in 2016.
Guided by Putnam's performance, Christopher Newport eventually finished second in the team standings at the William & Mary Invitational after accumulating 61 points, which placed the squad just behind the host Tribe.
A native of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, Putnam is coming off of a junior campaign in which he earned All-Region honors for the second straight year after placing 31st at the NCAA South / Southeast Championships. He also added an 18th-place showing at the 2018 CAC meet.
Putnam and the rest of his teammates will return to action on September 28 when the Captains take part in the Hornet Harrier Invitational in Winchester, Virginia.
