WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport sophomore
Erica Whitehouse (+21) became the first golfer, male or female, to repeat as conference champion in back-to-back years in Capital Athletic Conference history on Saturday afternoon as she secured her second individual title in as many tries. The second-year player won the event by five strokes and led CNU women's golf to a second place finish in the team standings as the Captains were edged out by the narrowest of margins by tournament champion York (Pa.).Â
Despite improving on their CAC Championship record 993 from a year ago by three strokes, the Captains finished just shy of a repeat title when the Spartans signed for a 989 to squeak past CNU by one stroke. Christopher Newport put the pressure on York with each scoring Captain parring the final hole, but their Spartan counterparts did just enough to hold on for the win.Â
York (Pa.) (+125) earned the team championship by one stroke with a 989 (329-334-326), while Christopher Newport (+126) was right behind with a 990 (345-318-327). Joining Whitehouse at the top of the leaderboard were fourth-place
Shreya Ganta (+32),
Katie Thome (+34) tied for fifth, and
Cameron Cook (+39) in eighth.Â
Whitehouse showed veteran composure in the 54-hole tournament on the Green Course at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg after struggling with an 85 in the opening round. She bounced back immediately and carded a record-setting Even Par 72 in the second round and held off the competition Saturday with an eight-over 80. She signed for a 237, good for 21-over par, while leading the tournament in birdies (6) and tying for second in total pars (25).Â
On Saturday morning, Whitehouse cruised through the front nine in 39 strokes, including a birrdie two on the 153-yard Par 3 ninth hole. She then parred the five of the last eight holes to finish out her championship performance. Whitehouse won individual medalist honors by five strokes over York's Anna Moore (+26).Â
Ganta made a move up the individual standings with her finest 18 holes of the tournament on Saturday with a seven-over 79. It was one of only three sub-80 rounds recorded by the 20 golfers in the championship field and came courtesy of an exceptional back nine. Despite playing in just her third career three-day event, Ganta finished strong with a one-over 37 on the back nine. She birdied the 332-yard Par 4 10th and the 345-yard Par 4 16th hole while also carding five pars on the back. The second birdie gave her five for the tournament, ranking second behind only Whitehouse.Â
Cameron Cook also carded her best of three rounds played on Saturday with a ten-over 82. She moved up to eighth on the individual leaderboard with ten pars on the day. Rounding out the scoring on the final day was
Katie Thome, who finished in fifth place. Thome shot a 14-over 86 and capped a three-day +34 for CNU. After struggling on the front nine Saturday, Thome rebounded with a four-over effort on the back with five pars.Â
Sophomore
Harper Lurie (+49) captured an 11th place finish for the Captains, outplaying all but one player from Mary Washington and each Southern Virginia participant. Lurie birdied the 473-yard Par 5 15th hole to highlight a strong overall performance that saw her sign for a 265 (91-86-88). She improved her CAC Championship score by 16 strokes from her freshman year to this year's sophomore performance.Â
As a team, the Captains fired two of the best three rounds scored over the three-day tournament.Â
