David Rabil Holds Individual Lead After First Round of CAC Men's Golf Championship; Captains Four Off the Pace

Live Scoring

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior David Rabil (+3) is locked in a tie for the lead at the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships, helping lead the Captains to a third place showing after the first 18 holes on Thursday. CNU fired a 31-over 315 in the first round, just four strokes off the pace set by leading Mary Washington (+27).

The 2017 CAC Player of the Year, Rabil is playing in his fourth consecutive conference championship, becoming the first player since Matt DiSalvo to compete in four straight. The southpaw was even through 16 holes and finished three-over par to kickstart his final trip to the conference championships. He birdied back-to-back holes on the 10th and 11th and added a third birdie on the monstrous 613-yard Par 5 15th hole.

With three holes under par, Rabil leads the tournament while also ranking first in Par 3 scoring (E). He is tied for fifth in both Par 4 (+3) and Par 5 scoring (E) as well through the first round. Rabil is tied with York's Casey Leebrick and the duo holds a one stroke lead on Mary Washington's Jason Guintu.

Joining Rabil in the top ten on the individual leaderboard is Davis Topping (+8), just five strokes back of the leaders. Topping also poured in three birdied on the day and paired a five-over front with a three-over back nine to sign for a 79. He birdied the 485-yard Par 5 sixth hole and added two on the back with under-par holes on the 12th and 17th.

With matching 81's, William Snyder and Kevin Quinto rounded out the scoring for CNU on Thursday. Quinto's round was up-and-down with two birdies and an under par score through the first five holes, but a tough stretch in the middle of the round followed before he fought back to get to 10-over for the day. He added a birdie on the long 15th hole and closed his round two-over in the final seven holes. Snyder was second on the team with 10 pars as he went out in 40 strokes and came back to the clubhouse in 41 for a consistent effort.

As a team, CNU signed for a 315, trailing York (Pa.) by just one stroke and 2018 champion Mary Washington by four.

The second round on the Gold Course of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. will tee off at 1:30 pm Friday with the third and final round scheduled for Saturday morning at 7:30 am. Live scoring is available with links found at CNUsports.com.
