CNU Men's Golf Battle Elements on First Day of Texas Cup; Captains in 8th Place After Opening Round

PLANO, Texas -- Battling wet conditions including steady rain during the round, the Christopher Newport men's golf team fired a 311 in the opening round of the 2019 Texas Cup, held at The Courses at Watters Creek in Plano, Texas. Four Captains sit in the top 50, separated by just four strokes, after the first round of action. 

Leading the way on day one was William Snyder (+4), tied for 20th after carding an opening round 76. David Rabil (+5) and Davis Topping (+6) finished right behind their teammate and are tied for 21st and 31st, respectively. Rounding out the scoring Captains on Saturday was Kevin Quinto, tied for 42nd with an eight-over 80. 

Rabil led the team with three birdies in the round, while Snyder continued his consistent play with 11 pars in the round. Topping had the most pars on the day for CNU, with 12, and Quinto matched Rabil to lead the Captains in Par 3 scoring with a 3.00 average. 

As a team, the Captains are 23-over par with a 311. McMurry University leads the event at five-over while CNU remains just 10 strokes back of LeTourneau for fourth place after 18 holes of play. 

Christopher Newport will start play on the 10th hole Sunday morning at 8:00 am in the final round of the Texas Cup.
