No. 8 Captains Women's Soccer Heads to York College of Pennsylvania for Saturday Matchup

YORK, Pa. -- Playing in their final road game of the regular season, the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team is set to travel to York College of Pennsylvania (7-10-0, 4-4-0) on Saturday, October 26 to take on the Spartans at 3:30 pm. The Captains (14-1-2, 7-1-0) will wrap up the regular season series at York (Pa.) in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Christopher Newport is coming off a 5-0 win at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday in which junior Riley Cook broke the single game scoring record with nine points. The Spartans have won two in a row and are coming into the game after a 1-0 shutout win at St. Mary's (Md.).

Fans who are unable to attend in person will be able to catch all the action in a live video webcast or on live stats presented through the York College Department of Athletics. Links to both can be found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.

Having clinched a first-round bye in the CAC Tournament, the Captains will be playing to keep pace with first-place Salisbury University as the Sea Gulls host Southern Virginia at 1:00 pm Saturday. Then, on Wednesday, October 30, the Captains will host Salisbury for the final regular season home game.

While an electric offense has highlighted another exceptional overall campaign for the Captains, the defense has separated itself as one of the best in the nation yet again in 2019. Led by All-Region goalkeeper Haley Eiser in all 17 starts this season, the Captains defense ranks 27th nationally in goals-against average with a 0.542 mark. Eiser has stopped nearly 84% of shots on-frame and owns a 0.55 GAA while playing all but 116 minutes this season.

Playing in front of their stalwart keeper has been seniors Shaye Doherty and Keiley McCarthy all season long. With Lulu Manley, Montana Coward, and Jill McDonald rounding out the defense at various points this season, the Captains have alread tied for the program record in shutouts with 12 clean sheets. The team is allowing just 6.9 shots per game and of those, only 3.3 per game have been on target.

York (Pa.) enters the Saturday matchup with two pivotal matchups remaining for conference seeding sake as they host the Captains before closing the season at Mary Washington, currently one game behind the Spartans in the standings. York has been led offensively by Natalie McCarthy with 16 points on 6 goals and 4 assists while Georgia Gillcrist has added 9 points on 3 goals and 3 assists. In goal, Jillian Kozak and Cat McCarty have split time this season with McCarty playing the bulk lately including a pair of shutouts in the last four games.

After winning the first matchup this season, 5-1, the Captains improved to 7-0-1 all-time against York College of Pennsylvania. In the win on September 28, Riley Cook became the all-time leading scorer in program history after the first of three four-goal performances this season.
