Hanna Heaton and Amy Sidaway Named Scholar All-Region Selections; Heaton Repeats as First Team Scholar All-American

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The United Soccer Coaches announced the esteemed winners of the annual Scholar All-Region and Scholar All-American awards this week with a pair of CNU women's soccer players earning the distinction of Scholar All-Region. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway represented Christopher Newport as two of the ten players to earn Scholar All-South Region honors. On Thursday, the Scholar All-American list was announced and Heaton made history again as a repeat selection to the first team.

The Scholar All-Region selections for Sidaway and Heaton extend a program-record streak to eight consecutive years with at least one player recognized for their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom. The award is distributed to players competing as juniors or above with at least a 3.40 cumulative grade point average while playing a minimum of 75 percent of games as an elite contributor. Sidaway and Heaton both qualified in spades as both players started all 19 games in 2025 and carried near perfect GPA's in the classroom.

Already established as a record-breaking student-athlete with her third Academic All-America selection on Tuesday, Heaton joins Gabby Gillis as the only players in program history to garner first team Scholar All-America recognition more than once in her career. Additionally, Heaton is the first student-athlete in any sport to garner first team All-America and first team Scholar All-America honors in multiple seasons after first having accomplished the feat last season and repeating in both awards as a senior. This year, Heaton is one of only two first team Scholar All-Americans receiving the award for a second time, joining Johns Hopkins defender Annie Isphording.

Heaton's accomplishments have stockpiled from the moment she transferred to CNU prior to the 2023 season. Over the course of three seasons wearing the Royal Blue and Silver, Heaton has piled up 86 career points, ranking sixth all-time, with 29 career goals and 28 career assists. She ranks third in assists and ninth in goals scored despite playing just three years.

The 2024 and 2025 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year concluded her career with 21 points on eight goals and five assists in 2025 with four game-winning goals. She helped lift Christopher Newport to a C2C Championship and a ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In her tenure, the Captains have won over 87 percent of their games played while outscoring opponents by a count of 147-25.

While Heaton handled the offensive end, the player responsible for keeping the opponents off the scoreboard has mounted an equally impressive career between the pipes for Christopher Newport. Amy Sidaway, a Shelby Township, Michigan native, has been named an All-Region selection in each of her first three years becoming the first ever CNU goalkeeper to accomplish that feat. This year, she adds Scholar All-Region status while double majoring in Business Management and Psychology.

On the field, Sidaway has completely re-written the CNU record books as a defensive stalwart in goal for the Captains. In just three seasons, Sidaway has set the program record for career shutouts with 33 and also sits atop the career goals-against average cart with a 0.41 mark. Among all active NCAA goalkeepers at Division I, II, and III, Sidaway ranks fourth in career GAA as she has established herself as one of the most dominant goalkeepers in the country.

This season, the junior netminder ranked 10th in Division III in goals-against average with a 0.38 mark after surrendering just seven goals all season long. Her .883 save percentage was the fourth-highest number in program lore and ranked in the top-20 in Division III this season.

The 2025 Scholar All-Region selections featured just one team from the South Region with only ten players represented. Representing one of the largest regions in the country, the Captains were recognized among players from schools like Johns Hopkins, Sewanee, Maryville, Piedmont, and Spalding.
