LEXINGTON, Va. -- The seventh-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will travel to Washington & Lee for a 2 p.m. showdown on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
Coming into the weekend, CNU sits at 4-0 on the season, including 1-0 on the road. Washington & Lee is 1-5 with a 1-1 mark at home.
For those fans unable to attend the contest, W&L will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at GeneralsSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
On Wednesday evening, the Captains stretched their winning streak to four straight games with a 5-0 triumph over Randolph-Macon. During that contest,
Rachel Cooke posted five points, while
Courtney Fiest added a pair of goals. With that performance, Fiest joined Lauren Cheatham as the only Captains in program history to score a goal in each of the first four games of a season. Cheatham performed the feat in 2013.
Along with Fiest and Cooke,
Bailey Miller added a pair of assists, while
Sarah Coon came through with her first collegiate strike.
So far this season, Fiest ranks second in the CAC with seven goals and 14 points.
Jackie Kotoriy also leads the league with four assists, and
Olivia Davis boasts a league-best 0.26 goals-against-average and .900 save percentage.
On the other side of the field, Washington & Lee was picked as the preseason favorite in the ODAC after reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 last year. Although the Generals sit at 1-5 on the season, two of their losses came against nationally-ranked competition after suffering a 1-0 overtime setback at No. 15 Johns Hopkins and a 4-0 defeat against No. 16 Vassar.
On an individual level, reigning second-team All-Conference performer Lauren Paolano has one of W&L's two goals this season, while Annalise Thole has the other. Defensively, Ariyel Yavalar has a 2.30 goals-against-average and a .767 save percentage. She is coming off of a season in which she secured third-team All-League honors while compiling 106 total saves.
In 14 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 13-1 record against Washington & Lee. Last season, the Captains posted a 4-1 victory in Newport News. Kotoriy notched a pair of goals for CNU during that contest, while Paolano chipped in with W&L's tally.
