NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will continue its three-game homestand on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when the Captains square off against Mary Washington at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek bout, CNU sits at 12-1 on the season, including 3-0 at home. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 11-4 overall and 5-3 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport kicked off its homestand with a 5-0 win over Saint Francis on Saturday. Against the Red Wolves,
Caroline Hughlett recorded her third multi-goal effort of the season, while
Ellen Gallagher,
Kendall Gibson, and
Lindsey Loar all added strikes of their own. Meanwhile, the Captains limited the opposition to only two shots, which were both handled by
Anna Mosciano in the third quarter.
With her tally, Gibson became the 18th different player to score a goal this year. That is currently the third-most in a single-season in school history. Previously, the 2007 and 2011 squads both had 19 different goal-scorers.
Among the offensive standouts this season, six players have posted their first career goal in 2026. That group includes junior transfer
Ella Elliott, sophomore standout
Hailey Ward, and first-year stars
Maddy Gagnon,
Ellen Gallagher,
Calli Martin, and
Isabel Tamayo.
Equally efficient and well-rounded, the Captains are averaging 4.38 goals per game, which is the second-highest rate in program history. They have notched multiple strikes in 12 of their 13 appearances and posted five or more tallies on six occasions.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Saturday's victory was the fifth straight shutout for CNU. The Captains have held their opponents scoreless for 300 consecutive minutes dating back to September 30. That is currently the fifth-longest streak in program history.
On an individual level,
Ella Fallen leads the NCAA with a remarkable .935 save percentage. Her 0.19 goals-against-average is also the best rate in the country and the fourth-best mark in the history of collegiate field hockey. Only Old Dominion's Kim Decker (0.13 in 1992), Becker's Brooke Robichaud (0.15 in 2001), and Clark's Jennifer West (0.17 in 1991) finished a season with a better goals-against-average.
Mary Washington comes into Wednesday after knocking off Centre, 3-0, on Saturday. That was the Eagles' fifth win in their last six outings. During the clash with the Colonels, Grayson Scott deposited her team-leading 11th goal of the season, while Anna Reed and Katie Royle also found the back of the cage. Meanwhile, Tori Winans picked up a pair of saves to earn the victory.
One of the favorites in the Collegiate Field Hockey Conference, Mary Washington is the two-time defending league champion. So far this season, the Eagles are second in the conference standings with a 3-1 record. Winans is second among league competitors with a 1.30 goals-against-average and .753 save percentage, while Scott is fifth with 22 points.
In 27 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 21-6 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains recorded a 3-0 win in Fredericksburg. During that showdown,
Caroline Hughlett drove home the game-winning goal, while
Riley Iasiello pitched in with a pair of assists.
After Wednesday, CNU will wrap up the regular season on Sunday with an 11 a.m. battle against Marian at Jennings Family Stadium.
