Christopher Newport extended its winning streak to six straight games after blanking Mary Washington, 5-0, on Wednesday. Against the Eagles,
Caroline Hughlett matched her career-high with six points after collecting two goals and a pair of assists. With that performance, she bumped her career total to 98 points, moving just two away from becoming the fourth player in program history to hit the century mark.
Hughlett's final assist against the Eagles was also her 30th career helper. She joined CNU Hall of Famer Belle Tunstall and former legend Haylie Black as the only players in school history to record at least 30 career goals and 30 career assists.
Along with Hughlett's eruption,
Riley Iasiello,
Gigi Stephan, and
Courtney Hughlett also scored against Mary Washington, while
Avery Mast and
Ellen Gallagher pitched in with assists.
Maddy Gagnon also played a season-high 24 minutes against the Eagles and helped generate a breakaway goal by Iasiello after connecting on a fast-break outlet pass in the final seconds of the first quarter.
On the defensive side, the Captains completed their 11th shutout of the season, equaling the second-highest total in program history. The squad has now silenced its last six opponents. During that stretch, they have not allowed a goal over the past 360 consecutive minutes, which is the fourth-longest run in program history.
So far this season, Christopher Newport ranks second in the nation in scoring defense (0.21 goals-against-average) and third in scoring offense (4.43 goals-per-game). The Captains are the only team in the country ranked in the top-five in both categories.
On an individual level,
Ella Fallen leads the NCAA in goals-against-average (0.18) and save percentage (.938). Meanwhile,
Caroline Hughlett currently ranks fifth in program history with a 2.14 points-per-game average, while
Lindsey Loar is sixth in that category with a 2.07 rate.
Marian is led by an offense that features two players ranked in the top-100 nationally in goals-per-game. Charlotte Touw currently has 14 total tallies this year, which places her third on the school's all-time single-season charts. Shaelyn Klassen has also struck 10 times while boasting a team-high five assists.
On the defensive side, Marian is led by the most accomplished goalie in program history. Senior Emilee Clarey already owns the school record for career wins (28), shutouts (6), and saves (352). Her 352 stops are also the 17th-most among active goalies in the country, while she also sports a .647 save percentage this season.
Sunday's game will mark the first meeting between Christopher Newport and Marian in field hockey.
After this weekend, the Captains will settle in and wait for the unveiling of the NCAA Tournament bracket, which is slated for November 8.
