Rabil Shares Win at 2017 Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate; Nodwell Ties for Third

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- In one of the top Division III tournaments of the spring, Christopher Newport men's golf made a big statement. Sophomore David Rabil turned in arguably the finest performance of his career, earning co-medalist honors at the prestigious Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate with a 36-hole 145 (+1). Joining him at the top of the leaderboard was his teammate Harry Nodwell (+2), who backed up a sixth place finish in the tournament last year by tying for third this season.

Rabil shared the individual title with Washington & Lee's Brian Peccie by heading into the clubhouse with a two-under 70 on the second day. He then waited, sitting in a tie for second as the rest of the field finished up. The only player ahead of Rabil was Lagrange College's Logan Lanier, but the Panther gave back three strokes in the last four holes to move Rabil to the top of the leaderboard.

With a solid two-day performance in the book, Rabil celebrated co-medalist honors with a 75-70. In Tuesday's second round, Rabil was red hot from the start, picking up four birdies on the front nine with just one bogey. With a big move up the leaderboard, Rabil birdied the 11th, putting him at four-under for the day. He hit a rough patch from 12-15, with three bogey's, but rallied for his for his sixth birdie of the day on the 16th, a Par 5, and finished with back-to-back pars.

The CNU sophomore led the field with 10 birdies, doing most of his damage on day two.  Nodwell was the model of consistency over the 36 holes, finishing tied for fifth with 24 pars. The English product added five birdies, and ranked fourth in Par 4 scoring (4.05). On Tuesday, things looked bleak for Nodwell after a four-over 40 on the front nine, but the CNU senior showed off his veteran tenor by shooting a one-under 35 on the back. He finished his second day with a 75 to wrap up the two-day event with a 71-75=146, good for two-over par.

Nodwell has now finished in the top ten at the Callaway Gardens twice after posting a sixth place finish on the 6,976-yard Par 72 Mountain View course last season. Rabil is coming off an impressive fall campaign in which he broke the school single round scoring record at the Golfweek Fall Invitational and finished the nine-round fall season with a 71.8 scoring average.

As a team, the Captains finished tied for 12th, with Kurt Funkhouser (73-85=158), Davis Topping (82-87=169), and Tyler Bennett (86-92=178) rounding out the scoring for CNU.
