NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team ran it's win streak to five on Sunday, shutting out Methodist University (7-6) by the final score of 9-0. CNU improves to 7-3 on the season with the win, wrapping up a successful first week as a top 25 team.
Junior
McKinney Harwood picked up two wins at No. 1 singles and doubles to lead the way. Harwood paired with
Alexandra Drye in tandem play, downing the Monarchs' top couple, Jenna Landis and Sam Munze, by a final score of 8-3. She would go on to add a straight set victory in singles play, defeating Ashton Walker (6-2, 6-3).
All three doubles matches finished in 8-3 final scores, as rookie
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Kate Huck won at No. 2 and
Emily Morgan paired with
Katie Carlson for the win at No. 3.
In singles action, CNU captured five straight set wins to run away with the team win. Morgan earned her second dual win in singles play as she appeared at No. 6, taking down Allison Himes (6-0, 6-2). Ranta-aho and Huck joined Harwood as two-match winners on Sunday, securing victories at No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Ranta-aho downed Landis (6-0, 6-1) and Huck defeated Munze (6-4, 6-1). Rounding out the Captains' wins on Sunday were
Isabelle Wessel (6-1, 7-5) over Davi Barbour at No. 4, and
Claire Dockrill (6-1, 4-6, 10-8) at No. 5 against Riley Zopp. Dockrill boasts the best singles winning percentage of the year for CNU with an 11-4 record, including a 7-2 mark in dual action.
The Captains will return to action on Saturday, March 25, hosting nationally-ranked Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action. The match will begin at Noon.
