RICHMOND, Va. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams capped off their first action of the season with a solid showing during the CNU XC Opener at the Roslyn Course in Richmond on Tuesday evening.
During the competition, the men placed second behind William & Mary, while the women came in fourth after William & Mary, Richmond, and VCU. The meet was a relay race that consisted of teams of two runners who each ran a pair of legs in alternating fashion. The first leg for each runner was a 3k, while the second was a 2k.
"Our training has been going well, and today was an extension of that," said head coach
Matthew Barreau. "Things went well. But we are not a championship team yet. The preseason polls came out today, and we are flattered that the coaches respect us to choose us as the season favorites in the Conference, and highly in the region as well. But we are not a championship team yet."
During Tuesday's meet, the men were led by
Jeff Dover and
Evan Fabish, who teamed up for a time of 30:50.11, which placed them fifth among the collegiate competitors. Three other CNU pairings also notched top-10 efforts.
Zach Campbell and
Ricardo Cabrera finished eighth in 31:22.64, while
Austin Conway and
Sam Murch came in ninth just a split second later.
Rounding out the top-10,
Daniel Read and
Joshua Speier posted a time of 31:28.84, which just edged out the
Andrew Benfer-
Bruce Schlesman duo that came in 11th in 31:34.69.
On the women's side,
Lydia Cromwell and
Logan Harrington teamed up for a third-place finish after crossing the line in 36:23.95.
Emmie Schmitt and
Hannah Bullen followed in 16th with a time of 38:59.09, while the pairing of
Christina Dittmer and
Graciela Slyer rounded out the scoring duos with an 18th-place effort in 39:19.44.
Deanna Corts and
Allison Taylor also teamed up on a 19th-place performance with a combined time of 39:27.16.
"We are working very hard with the team on executing right now," said Barreau. "Execute your plan. Each person will encounter a different challenge this season, whether it's in a workout, a week, a class, a race, or a myriad other things. We're trying to build confidence that each can execute their plans despite those hardships."
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 18 for the William & Mary Cross Country Invitational.
