Complete ResultsNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second straight year, the Christopher Newport University golf team has been crowned conference champions. Led by a dominant individual medalist performance by junior
Matt DiSalvo, the Captains ran away with the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Championship for the program's second conference title in as many years.
Â
DiSalvo earned individual medalist honors, powered by a record-setting opening round at the James River Country Club. On Saturday, the CNU junior set a new low scoring mark for CNU with a 64, which also broke the conference low round and scoring mark with his six-under performance. Along with winning the conference championship, DiSalvo earned first team All-Conference and CAC Player of the Year honors.
Â
On Sunday, DiSalvo played the par game, working a conservative game plan to perfection while coasting to the title. His 36-hole final score of a seven-under 133 (64-69) shattered the previous CAC record for an individual low tournament by eight strokes in relation to par, and by 12 strokes total. Robert Ehrhardt (Wesley) set the low tournament score at +1 in 2012 when he finished with a 145, meaning DiSalvo's effort was the first CAC Championship performance under par.
Â
The CNU junior cruised through the first nine on Sunday, making the turn with a one-under 34. He birdied the eighth hole for the second straight day and carried his big lead to the back nine. His lone mishap in the two-day tournament came on the 428-yard Par 4 11
th hole, where he double-bogeyed, but the blemish wouldn't stand as he birdied 14 and 17 to finish the day under par with a 69. It is the first time in his career that he managed under par performances in the same tournament, as well as his first two scores in the 60's.
Â
DiSalvo's effort broke the CNU record for a tournament score by three strokes, besting Chris Olson's 136 from the Tom Kinder Memorial in 2009. The record-shattering performance was not limited to DiSalvo, as the rest of the Captains contributed to the finest two-day score in program history, finishing with a 15-over 575. The previous record has stood since 2001, where the Captains fired a 577 in the Virginia State Championship. The two-day total is ten strokes better than the previous conference record in relation to par (+15), and shatters the low two-day tournament record by 26 strokes. Wesley's 2010 CAC Championship effort of 601 (+25) was the previous mark.
Â
Helping lead the way were sophomores
Harry Nodwell and
Charlie Peavley, who finished second and third, respectively. Both fired a two-over 72 in Sunday's second round, while Peavley's eagle three on the Par 5 10
th highlighted the action. The second-year Captains stuck a 220-yard shot from the fairway within three feet of the pin and tapped in for only the second eagle of the tournament. With their top three finish, both Nodwell and Peavley also earned first team All-Conference honors.
Â
Ryan Pratt and
Sam Robinson also earned All-Conference laurels, capturing second team honors by finishing tied for eighth and tenth, respectively. Both fired seven-over 77's on day two, as Pratt finished with a 154 (+14) and Robinson just one stroke back with a 155 (+15).
Â
CNU captured the 2015 CAC Golf Championship by 31 strokes, defeating second place Penn State Harrisburg (+46) despite four Lions in the top ten of the individual leaderboard. York (Pa.) finished at +62 to take third place.
Â
