Live VideoDANVILLE, Va. -- The ninth-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team will continue its road swing on Friday evening when the Captains head to Averett for a non-conference showdown at 6 p.m. at the Grant Center.
CNU enters the contest with a 15-1 record, including a four-match winning streak. Averett comes in at 8-7, including a 3-1 victory over Mary Baldwin in its last outing on Tuesday. Long-time rivals in the USA South, the two programs have met 72 times with the Captains holding a 39-33 edge in the all-time series. They last met during the 2012 USA South Playoffs with Christopher Newport picking up a 3-0 win in the semifinals.

In their last outing, the Captains upended Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, on Tuesday evening. During the match in Virginia Beach,
Hannah Miller led the squad with 11 kills, while
Maddie McCann chipped in with 10. The squad also did strong work along the net as Miller,
Briana Sutton, and
Rachel Conway all assisted on three blocks apiece.
Off to the finest start in program history, CNU ranks sixth nationally with a .933 winning percentage. The team also sits among the NCAA leaders in several offensive categories. Currently, Christopher Newport's .288 hitting percentage is the second-highest in the country. The Captains also stand 12th nationally with a 13.44 kills-per-set average and 14th with a 12.36 assists-per-set mark.
On an individual level, Conway and Miller have both settled in among the top performers in the country. Conway, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, is averaging 10.50 assists-per-set, which places her seventh in the NCAA. Miller also ranks seventh overall with a .405 hitting percentage.
In addition to leading the Captains in hitting percentage, Miller also has 49 blocks and is tied with Sutton for the team-lead with 165 kills. McCann and
Eliza Fisher have also registered at least 100 kills for CNU. On the defensive end,
Brooke Moore is averaging 4.15 digs-per-set, while
Ashley Rock has contributed 33 blocks up front.
Averett comes in to Friday's match-up having won three of its last four battles. Hannah Shields has been at the forefront of the Cougar attack with 273 kills and 15 aces. Nicole Barringer has also dished out 9.48 assists per set, while Christiana Summa has pocketed a team-high 186 digs. Leslie Fulton leads AU's front-line defense with 39 blocks.
Following Friday's action, Christopher Newport will return to the court for the start of CAC play at Salisbury on Tuesday evening. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
