Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team ended a busy week with two more victories on Sunday. The 14th-ranked Captains defeated Frostburg State University by scores of 2-1 and 9-1 at Captains Park in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Bobcats came into the doubleheader 4-0 this year in conference play.
The CNU triumphs completed a week that consisted of five doubleheaders in a six-day span, and saw
Keith Parr's team win nine of ten games.
Game one on Sunday on a cool and breezy day at Captains Park featured a tremendous pitching effort from both starters. CNU sophomore
Krista Lewis and Bobcats freshman Hannah Tavik were both sailing along until the Captains finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior outfielder
Kristina McLaughlin grounded to first base to drive in freshman
Rachael Shiflett to break the scoreless tie. The Bobcats answered with a solo run in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore Lauren Capece delivered an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.
The Captains mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and benefitted from an error to end the game. Sophomore
Tori Clarke's groiundball was mishandled allowing senior
Candice Zollars to score the winning unearned run to give the Captains the 2-1 victory.
Lewis went the distance for CNU, allowing just one run on four hits to improve her record to 14-2 on the season. Tavik gave up just one earned run and took the loss to fall to 6-4 on the year.
In the finale, Christopher Newport plated four runs in the fourth inning and pulled away to win 9-1 in a game shortened to six innings by the eight-run rule. The Captains exploded for 16 hits in the nightcap, including three each from seniors
Candice Zollars and
Kristina McLaughlin as well as sophomore
Meagan Jones.
Game two also ended with a Bobcat error. Sophomore
Alexis Pope's fly ball in the sixth inning was dropped in right field allowing freshman pinch-runner
Stephanie Condenzio to score with the ninth run for the Captains, pushing the margin to eight runs.
Freshman starter
Makayla Jenkins threw the first five innings for CNU, yielding just one unearned run in the first inning. Jenkins picked up the win to improve to 3-1 for the season. Sophomore
Hanah Marshall pitched two scoreless innings to wrap up the game for the Captains. Sophomore Mary Ann Moore took the loss for FSU after allowing seven runs on 12 hits, although only three of the runs were earned. Moore is now 3-3 on the year, and the Bobcats are now 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the CAC.
The Captains were again without the services of their top hitter, junior
Sabrina Hill, who was injured on Saturday prior to the start of game one of two against Southern Virginia. Hill, who leads the squad in hits, doubles, home runs, and RBI's, will be evaluated early in the week.
Following the ten games in six days, CNU is now 26-6 overall and 7-1 in the CAC. The Captains travel to Fredericksburg on Wednesday for a conference doubleheader at Mary Washington.
