Softball Rolls to Doubleheader Sweep over Southern Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team swept a pair of games Saturday over Southern Virginia University. The Captains posted an 18-0 win in the first game and took the nightcap by a score of 12-0. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Captains scored 30 runs on 25 hits in the twin bill, and enjoyed big innnings in each game. CNU opened up game one with six runs in the second inning and seven more in the fourth. In the nightcap, Christopher Newport posted eight runs in the third inning to pull away.

Senior outfielder Kristina McLaughlin drove in four runs with three hits in the opener, and also scored four times, Two of her three hits were doubles.

Senior designated hitter Taylor Dillow was three-for-three and also drove in four runs in game one. Dillow's hits included a three-run home run in the fourth inning, her third long ball of the season.

In the second game, sophomore outfielder Meagan Jones was three-for-three and sophomore second baseman Tori Clarke posted two hits and drove in four runs. Three of Clarke's four RBI's came on a home run in the eight-run third inning, It was Clarke's first home run of the season.

CNU's starting pitchers, sophomores Hanah Marshall and Krista Lewis, each notched wins while throwing shutout ball. Marshall struck out eight in five innings of work and is now 9-3 on the year. Lewis fanned five in three innings in game two and improved to 13-2.

CNU, ranked 14th in the nation, improved to 24-6 with the wins. The Knights fell to 3-16 following the twin bill at Captains Park. While Southern Virginia is a new member of the Capital Athletic Conference, games against the Knights this season do not count toward the league standings. The Captains are 5-1 in conference action this season.

The Captains were without the services of their top hitter for much of the day. Junior Sabrina Hill suffered a pre-game injury, and was a late scratch from the starting lineup for game one. She did appear as a pinch-hitter in game two and flied out in her only at bat of the afternoon.

Christopher Newport hosts the Bobcats of Frostburg State Sunday. The CAC doubleheader will begin at 12 noon at Captains Park, where CNU is 13-1 now this season.
