NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team remains unbeaten at home in 2014 following a doubleheader sweep Sunday over Eastern Mennonite. CNU has won eight straight games and the Captains are now 6-0 at Captains Park following wins by scores of 9-1 (in a game shortened to five innings) and 4-3.
Christopher Newport jumped to a 4-0 advantage in the first inning of the opener and never looked back. Sophomore
Tori Clarke plated two runs with a double and sophomore
Alexis Pope scored two more with a single in the opening frame. Junior
Sabrina Hill belted her first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fourth inning, to help close out the 9-1 win in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Sophomore
Krista Lewis pitched the opener for CNU and allowed just one unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. She improved to 6-1 on the season with the win.
In the nightcap, Pope singled in the bottom of the seventh to score freshman pinch-runner
Stephanie Condenzio with the deciding run in a 4-3 CNU triumph. The Captains had tied the game at 3-3 when senior
Candice Zollars delivered a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning to score freshman
Rachael Shiflett.
Sophomore
Hanah Marshall went the distance in the second game to earn the victory. Her record is now 3-2 on the season.
Pope had five hits in seven at bats in the twin bill and drove in three runs, while sophomore
Meagan Jones posted five hits in six official trips to the plate for the day.
The 21st-ranked Captains improved to 9-3 on the season, and will host Shenandoah Tuesday at Captains Park. The doubleheader with the Hornets will begin at 2 p.m.
CNU was originally scheduled to play in this weekend's Sea Gull Invitational, hosted by Salisbury University, but wintry weather conditions forced the cancellation of that tournament. CNU then planned a trip to Salem, Va. to take part in the Roanoke College Softball Bash, but that tournament was cancelled Friday morning due to snow in the Roanoke area.
