LYNCHBURG, Va.- Christopher Newport and Lynchburg split a non-conference softball doubleheader Friday. CNU took the opener, 9-2, while Lynchburg won the nightcap, 4-1. The loss in the second game ended the Captains winning streak at 15 straight.
CNU, ranked 18th in the nation, jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning of the opener and never looked back. The Captains added three more runs in the fourth and two insurance runs in the sixth en route to the 9-2 triumph. Christopher Newport posted ten hits in the first game, and sophomore starter
Krista Lewis pitched five strong innings to pick up the win and improve to 10-1 on the season.
Seniors
Candice Zollars and
Kristina McLaughlin as well as junior
Sabrina Hill each knocked in two runs in the first game. Four of CNU's ten hits were doubles, including two by Hill.
In the second game, the Hornets posted two runs in each of the first two innings on the way to the 4-1 win. Freshman catcher
Karlee Holzbach slammed a solo home run in the second inning for the only CNU run of the game. It was Holzbach's second big fly of the season.
Sophomore starter
Hanah Marshall took the loss in the nightcap to fall to 6-3 for the season. Lynchburg starter Amber Ingram went the distance allowing just one run on six hits to improve to 7-1 on the year.
CNU is now 16-4 while LC is 13-5 for the season.
Christoher Newport is 10-0 at home this season and the Captains host the top team in the nation on Saturday. CNU will take on 14-0 Salisbury at Captains Park in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
CNU's home winning streak is 16 games dating back to last season, the second-longest running home winning streak in the country.
