NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team continued its offensive onslaught Saturday, winning twice over Roanoke College at Captains Park. The Captains, now 15-3 and ranked 21st in the nation, scored 22 runs on 29 hits in the twin bill and have now extended their winning streak to 14 straight games.
CNU took the opener, 9-4, and won in the nightcap, 13-5, in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. Christopher Newport is now 10-0 playing at home this season.
On a sunny and breezy day in Newport News, the Captains took advantage of gusty winds and crushed five home runs in the doubleheader. Junior first baseman
Sabrina Hill continued her hot streak, blasting two home runs in the second game including a three-run shot in the fifth inning that pushed the margin to eight runs to end the game. Hill has now posted six home runs this season, and has 26 in her career, moving her into a tie with Jen Falin for second place on the school's all-time home run list. Hill ended up with six hits in eight at bats on Saturday, and drove in four runs.
In the opener, CNU scored three times in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings en route to the 9-4 triumph. Junior catcher
Kelsey Lewis smashed a three-run home run, her second of the season, in the fourth to put the Captains ahead for the first time. After the Maroons tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth, sophomore third baseman
Alexis Pope popped a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, her third of the year, to give CNU a 6-3 advantage. Pope was three for four in the opener and finished the day with four hits in seven trips to the plate.
CNU added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game, 9-4.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Krista Lewis pitched five innings in the first game and posted her ninth win of the year against just one loss. Freshman
Makayla Jenkins pitched the final two innings for her first save of the season.
In the second game, the Captains jumped out to a big lead by scoring seven times in the first inning. Senior rightfielder
Kristina McLaughlin belted a two-run home run, her first of the season...and Hill then went back-to-back with a solo shot of her own. CNU knocked out Roanoke starter Stephanie Clark in the second inning, as the Captains built a 10-0 edge with three more runs. Roanoke cut into the lead with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth, but Hill's walk-off three-run blast in the fifth provided the final score of 13-5.
Sophomore starter
Hanah Marshall picked up the win in the nightcap to improve to 6-2 for the year.
Roanoke, now 4-9 on the season, was led by junior centerfielder Rhea Schleicher who homered twice in the opening game and knocked in three of the Maroons four runs.
Christopher Newport has now scored 43 runs on 54 hits in their last four games, which includes Thursday's doubleheader sweep at William Peace University.
CNU will travel to Lynchburg on Wednesday for a doubleheader before opening play in the Capital Athletic Conference next Sunday, March 23rd, against Salisbury at Captains Park.
