NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team got off to a 1-3 start this season, but as the weather has warmed up, so have the Captains.
Keith Parr's team is ranked 21st in the country and the squad is riding a 12-game winning streak. Saturday, CNU puts that streak on the line in a non-conference doubleheader vs. Roanoke College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
CNU is coming off an offensive explosion on Thursday that saw the Captains score 21 runs on 25 hits in a doubleheader sweep over William Peace University. Christopher Newport won the opener in Raleigh, 7-0, and then ran away with the nightcap, 14-4.
Junior first baseman
Sabrina Hill led the onslaught with five hits and six runs batted in against the Pacers. Hill smacked two home runs in the opener in Raleigh and now has four for the season and 24 for her career. Hill is fourth on the school's all-time home run list.
Sophomore pitcher
Krista Lewis earned the win in the opening game Thursday and is now 8-1 on the year with a 1.17 ERA.
Roanoke enters play on Saturday with a 4-7 record. The Maroons are coming off a 9-7 loss on Wednesday at Guilford College.
CNU has not only won 12 straight games, but the Captains are also 8-0 in home games this season. Saturday's forecast for Captains Park in Newport News is calling for partly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 60's.
