Softball Sweeps Shenandoah...Captains Have Won Ten Straight Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team won a pair of non-conference games Tuesday over Shenandoah Universty on a warm and sunny day at Captains Park. CNU prevailed by scores of 7-3 and 3-2 to improve to 11-3 on the season. Keith Parr's squad has now won ten games in a row, and is now 8-0 at home this season.

The Captains needed late heroics in each game to notch the victories over their former conference rivals. CNU and Shenandoah were members of the USA South for many years, but the Hornets have moved to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and Christopher Newport is a first-year member of the Capital Athletic Conference.

In the opener, CNU scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and post a 7-3 triumph. In the nightcap, senior Kristina McLaughlin smacked a run-scoring double in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off 3-2 triumph.

Christopher Newport got solid pitching from starters Krista Lewis and Hanah Marshall. Lewis, a sophomore who went the distance in the first game, picked up her seventh victory of the season against just one loss. Marshall, also a sophomore, retired 15 straight Hornets through the middle innings of game two and improved to 4-2.

The Captains used the long ball in each game to post runs. Senior Taylor Dillow belted a pinch-hit two-run shot in the opener, her second of the season. Junior Sabrina Hill also homered for the second time this year in game two, a solo shot in the fourth inning that tied the game at 2-2.

Freshman Karlee Holzbach posted three singles in the first game and drove in two runs.

Shenandoah is now 1-6 on the season following the defeats.

The 21st-ranked Captains, now 11-3 overall, will travel to Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader at William Peace University. CNU will return home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Roanoke at Captains Park.
