ASHLAND, Va. -- Sophomore Krista Lewis (1-1) picked up her first collegiate victory on Tuesday, as the No. 17 Captains split a doubleheader on the road at Randolph-Macon College (1-1). Christopher Newport (1-3) won the first game, 9-1, before dropping the second, 8-0.

The Captains wasted no time getting out to a big lead in their first victory of the season, scoring eight runs in the first three innings. Sophomore Meagan Jones singled to lead-off the game, and came around to score on a Kristina McLaughlin double two batters later. The senior outfielder would come around to score herself on a wild pitch as CNU took a 2-0 lead in the first.

After Tori Clarke walked to lead off the second inning, senior Taylor Dillow smoked a double into left center field to score the sophomore shortstop. McLaughlin then picked up her second RBI of the game when she went the opposite way with a single to score Rachael Shiflett. Junior Sabrina Hill also doubled in the inning, chasing starting pitcher Jenna Best.

The extra-base hits kept coming for CNU, as Clarke got things started in the third with a one-out double, followed by a two-out walk by Kelsey Lewis. The Captains offense rallied with two on and two down, as Jones came up and cleared the bases with a triple into left center field. Rachael Shiflett plated Jones with a single into left and the Captains took a 8-1 lead after three.

Randolph-Macon scored their lone run in the bottom of the second, when Best doubled home Sam Moore. After the two-out RBI, Lewis struck out Jessica Matthews to end the threat. She struck out two more in the third and finished with four K's in the game. The sophomore picked up the win with a complete game when the offense added the ninth run in the top of the fifth and Lewis closed out the bottom half unscathed. She scattered five hits over five innings of work for her first career win.

In the second game, the Captains bats were unable to get going against rookie Kelsey McLaughlin (1-0). The Yellow Jackets freshman kept CNU off balance all day, allowing just two hits while striking out four. R-MC got seven hits and eight RBI from the top four batters in the lineup, led by a 2-for-3, 3-RBI effort by catcher Madison Gilman.

Hill and Clarke recorded the two hits for CNU, singling for the Captains in game two.

Christopher Newport will return to action this weekend at the annual Beach Blast tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College. On Friday, February 28, the Captains will take on Catholic (11am) and Allegheny (3pm), and on Saturday, March 1, CNU will face Western Connecticut State (Noon) and Manhattanville (2pm).
