NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 17th-ranked Christopher Newport softball team will return to action on Tuesday, February 25 as they travel to Randolph-Macon College (0-0) for the Yellow Jackets' season opener. The Captains (0-2) will face their first pitch at 1:30 pm in the non-conference doubleheader.
CNU opened their season this weekend, taking on 10th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College in a doubleheader on the road. The Captains dropped the pair, 2-0 and 5-2, but saw several players get off to a good start. Rookie
Karlee Holzbach blasted her first career home run and was 3-for-3 in the second game, while junior
Sabrina Hill opened her season with a 2-for-5 performance.
In the pitching circle, sophomore
Krista Lewis had a strong performance, giving up just four hits in six innings of work. She struck out four in the opener, and held one of the top programs in the region to just two runs.
The Yellow Jackets will be opening their season against CNU on Tuesday, after being selected to finish second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll. In 2013, Randolph-Macon was 34-9 and featured four All-Region players. Three of those four return to the field in 2014, led by first team All-Region shortstop Sharese Jarvis. Jarvis tied the league record with 17 home runs last season and topped the ODAC with 50 RBI.
