FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A pair of Christopher Newport freshmen picked up their first career wins, but the Captains (0-2) suffered a 7-2 setback on a neutral court against Methodist University Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs, ranked ninth in the Atlantic South region, swept doubles and won four singles matches to pull away from CNU for the win.
Katie Carlson and
Logan Eldridge earned their first career dual victories for the Captains, closing the match with a pair of wins for CNU. First, Carlson won at No. 4 singles, dropping Abigail Randolph (6-4, 6-4) in straight sets. Then, in the final match of the day, Eldridge won the first set, 6-2, before dropping the second, 3-6. She bounced back after the second-set loss and pulled away from her opponent, Sam Munze, for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
In doubles action, the Captains battled at the top two spots before falling in both spots by a final score of 8-6. Carlson paired with senior
Jodi Noland at No. 1 doubles, falling to Laura Baker and Isabella Graf; and Eldridge played with sophomore
Jackie Gaine for the 8-6 setback at No. 2, against Randolph and Emily Talley.Â
Noland suffered a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 1 singles to Baker, while rookie
Hailey Nettles also picked up a few wins against Stephanie Hunter at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-3).Â
The Captains will return to action on February 22, traveling to NCAA Division I Norfolk State University at Noon.
