NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Powered by a career-high 17 points from freshman
Taylor Delgado, the 12th-ranked Captains (20-3, 12-2) earned a first round bye in the Capital Athletic Conference today after beating Penn State Harrisburg, 72-51. The Lions fall to 6-17 overall, 1-13 in the league, and CNU has clinched one of the top two seeds in the CAC Tournament scheduled for the last week of February.
Delgado's hot afternoon shooting started right out of the gate, knocking down three of her first five attempts, including a pair of three-pointers. She scored on three straight possessions after checking into the game for the first time, and her back-to-back treys with just over five minutes remaining stretched the first half lead to eight, 26-18.
CNU carried an 11-point edge into the locker room, riding Delgado and senior
Nicole Mitchell for the bulk of the opening stanza. Mitchell played 16 minutes in the first half and was already nearing her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Captains shook off a slow start and ended the half shooting 50% from the field on 17-of-34 from the field, including six three-pointers on 13 attempts. The Lions were also 50% from the floor, going 12-for-24 with a pair of three-pointers.
Kiara Carter was the early star for Penn State Harrisburg, with 10 points, while Lucky Snypse added eight rebounds in the first half.
The Lions would hang in with the Captains early in the second half, cutting the lead to eight, 49-41, with 9:33 remaining, but the last 10 minutes of the game were all Captains. CNU ran off a 23-10 run to finish the game, pulling away for a 21-point win that was led by the team defensive effort.
CNU forced 36 turnovers, getting 23 steals in the contest. Sophomore
Brandi Holland led the effort with six thefts, followed by Mitchell's four and senior
Andrea Hobbs also ripping off four.
Delgado finished the second half with nine points, hitting three more three-pointers to finish the game with a game-high 17 points. Mitchell finished out her double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds, while junior
Camry Green had a solid second half to finish with eight points and 13 boards. Holland was also in double figures with 13 points.
Harrisburg got 15 points and 13 rebounds from Carter, and Snypse finished with a game-high 14 rebounds.
Christopher Newport will close out their home schedule with their next game, as Senior Night will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 pm.
