Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the program's first home meet of the season, the Christopher Newport men's cross country team captured the CNU Invitational title, while the women placed second among non-Division I squads on Saturday afternoon at Lee Hall Mansion.
During the meet, the men posted a score of 32, which edged out fellow Capital Athletic Conference member York (Pa.) by three to seal the team championship. The women's title also came down to a battle between the CAC powers with the Spartans topping the Captains by 22. York finished with 24 points, while CNU compiled 46.
On an individual level,
Logan Harrington posted the top performance after finishing fourth among Division III competitors and 10th overall on the women's side.
Samuel Martin was the top competitor for the men's team after the senior came in sixth in Division III and 13th among all runners.
In the 8k, Martin cruised to a time of 26:40.9, which paced Christopher Newport. Less than four seconds back,
Andrew Benfer also pieced together a strong race after crossing the line in seventh.
Daniel Richard orchestrated a top-10 performance as well with a time of 26:56.2, which placed him 10th in Division III.
Grayson Reid was on his heels in 11th in 26:59.8.
Rounding out the squad's top-five,
Bradley Turner registered a time of 27:10.8.
Jeff Dover clocked in at 27:11.5 as well.
On the women's side, Harrington headlined CNU's efforts after completing the 6k in 23:51.2. Two other Captains joined Harrington in the top-10 as well. Senior
Julie Machamer placed eighth in 24:19.0, while
Emmie Schmitt was 10th in Division III with a 24:37.3 clocking. Freshman
Hannah Bullen also looked strong after completing the course in 25:00.3
Among other competitors,
Kate van Emmerik and
Briana Stewart finished 16th and 17th, respectively. Van Emmerik capped off the competition in 25:20.6 before Stewart wrapped up her run in 25:46.8.
Later in the afternoon, during the open 3k portion of the meet,
Dylan Freeman placed second overall with a time of 9:59.2.
Cullen Monahan was 10 seconds back, while
Dane Boegner and
Matthew Byrom rounded out the top-five. Among women's competitors,
Graciela Slyer was second after crossing the line in 11:41.2.
Deanna Corts was close behind in 11:53.4.
Saturday's meet was the final tune-up for the Captains before the CAC Championships, which will be held in Fredericksburg, Va. on November 1.
