Captains Golf Finishes 17th at Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational

Full Scores

DESTIN, Fla. -- Playing at The Raven Golf Course in the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, the Christopher Newport University Captains wrapped up with a 17th place finish at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational. CNU finished with a 305-312-306 line as a team, shooting 71-over par in the 54-hole event.

The course played as a 6,561-yard Par 71 and featured some of the best teams in Division III college golf. Methodist University and Texas-Tyler tied for the team championship, finishing at 17-over (869) for the shared title. Individual medalist honors were also shared, between Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglia and Methodist's Mason Stutler.

After Sunday's first round, the Captains were led by junior Matt DiSalvo and senior Ryan Pratt. The two combined for a +1 score on the back nine in the first round, as DiSalvo paired one bogey with a couple birdies to drop his first round score to a promising two-over 73.

Playing in difficult conditions following a pounding rain for much of the day, Monday's second round was a bit more tumultous for the CNU golfers. Rookie Wonsuk Rhee shined on day two, however, firing a career-best three-over 74. The rookie had four birdies in the second round, including on one of the most difficult holes of the tournament, the 415-yard Par 4 2nd. The CNU freshman was one of only five players who picked up a stroke on that hole in the second round.

In Tuesday's third and final round, Rhee continued to excel for the Captains, and broke his one-day old career-best score with a two-over 73. Rhee finished the three-day event with a 79-74-73, clawing up the leaderboard to tie for 38th on the player leaderboard, leading the way for the Captains. The freshman finished 13-over par, just 17 strokes behind the champions.

DiSalvo wrapped up his tournament three strokes behind his rookie teammate, with a 229 (73-79-77), tied for 54th. All five Captains factored into the team scoring in the Invitational, as Pratt fired a 236 (75-81-80) while rookies Alex Rivera and Joel Choi finished at 237 (82-79-76) and 242 (78-80-84), respectively. Rivera's five-over 76 was the second best score of the final round for CNU, and included a pair of birdies.

Christopher Newport will close out the fall schedule at the O'Bryant/Jensen Memorial in Greensboro, N.C. on October 27-28.
