NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On Senior Day, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team saw their 13-match win streak come to an end as the Methodist University Monarchs (17-2, 11-0) pulled away for a 6-3 win. The Captains (15-5, 10-1) secured the number two seed in next week's USA South Conference Tournament and will open play on Friday, April 12 at 2:00 pm against #7 seeded N.C. Wesleyan.
Three of the Captains starters were honored in a special pre-match ceremony, as
Kim Morrissett,
Marion Gloor and
Melisande Downs were playing in their final home regular season match.
CNU found itself in an early 3-1 hole as the Monarchs took two doubles matches and the first singles finish. CNU did win at No. 2 doubles, as rookie
Jackie Gaine paired with
Jodi Noland for an 8-2 win over Isabella Graf and HIllary Petruska, but Morrissett and Gloor were edged out at the top flight, 9-7.
In singles play, Morrissett bounced back for a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katherine Meindl, picking up her 11th win of the season. Also, sophomore
Angela Stallman extended her win streak to 16 straight with a win at No. 6 singles, dropping Petruska 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. She tied Liz Thedford's streak of 16 straight in 2007, ranking fourth all-time at CNU.
The Captains have a non-conference match against Salisbury University on Tuesday, April 9, before turning their focus to the conference tournament on Friday. For more information on the USA South Tournament, go to the league website at www.usasouth.net.
