CNU Women's Tennis Wins a Pair on the Road

Captains drop Bridgewater, Mary Baldwin away from home

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team won two matches on Saturday, running their win streak to 12 straight matches after a 5-0 win at Bridgewater and 9-0 sweep of Mary Baldwin. The Captains improve to 14-4 overall, with a perfect 9-0 record against league foes. 

In the morning match against the Eagles, CNU raced out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. Seniors Kim Morrissett and Marion Gloor earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, dropping Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan. CNU also got an 8-6 win at No. 2 (Jackie Gaine/Jodi Noland) and an 8-4 win at No. 3 (Melisande Downs/Angela Stallman). 

Bridgewater (11-3) found themselves in a quick 3-0 hole headed into singles play, where they succumbed to a pair of CNU underclassmen for the final score. Sophomore Angela Stallman defeated Miranda Donovan (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 6 position, and rookie Jackie Gaine blew past Olivia Stone (6-0, 6-1) at No. 5, to clinch the victory. The remaining four matches at singles were unfinished.

Later in the day, the Captains traveled to Staunton, Va. for a conference match against the Fighting Squirrels (1-11, 1-8). CNU posted a dominant win, dropping just a single game in the conference match. 

The same three tandems played together in doubles, earning three 8-0 victories for an early lead. In singles, Morrissett defeated Katy Kelly (6-0, 6-1) at the No. 1 position, and the rest of the Captains earned 6-0, 6-0 wins. That group included sophomore Angie Menendez getting a win at No. 6 singles against Katie Cerow. 

The Captains are back in action at home, taking on Greensboro College on April 6 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a match against Methodist University on April 7 at 11:00 a.m.
