NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Bailey Jensen unloaded 13 kills on just 18 swings, while
Alyssa Kidd recorded her seventh double-double of the season as the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team cruised past Washington & Lee, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-8), on Tuesday evening at the Freeman Center.
Jensen was a dominant force along the net for the Captains, hitting at a .667 clip while recording three blocks, including a pair of solo stops. Kidd was on top of her game as well, collecting 33 assists and 11 digs. The senior setter also notched five kills on just six attempts.
With the victory, CNU improves to 17-2 and extends its winning streak to nine matches. The setback snaps Washington & Lee's three-game roll and puts the Generals at 14-7 overall.
In the first set, the Captains stormed out to a gigantic lead that briefly appeared to be insurmountable. Jensen,
Christie Fellows, and
Cory Harris all fired a pair of kills to highlight an early surge that gave the hosts a 14-6 advantage. From there, the Generals orchestrated a comeback.
Alex Kinzer posted a kill and ace on back-to-back rallies before Meghan Meleski and Taylor Maxey teamed up on a block to help W&L piece together an 11-4 run that pulled the squad back within one at 18-17. Later, M.A. Boles collected kills on consecutive rallies to even the match at 19.
Refusing to let Washington & Lee complete its epic comeback, Jensen and Fellows took over. Jensen crushed back-to-back kills before Kidd dumped in a shot that led to a General timeout. Leading 22-19, the Captains closed out the set as Jensen stuffed a W&L attack before Fellows fired a pair of aces to clinch the 25-19 victory.
Although CNU stymied Washington & Lee's late run in the first frame, the visitors regrouped and pulled out to a 12-9 lead at the beginning of the second set. Despite four early lasers by Kolden and a pair by Jensen, the Captains found themselves down by three heading into a Christopher Newport timeout.
After
Chastity Lacy came out of the break with a blistering rocket,
Abby McIntyre launched two aces to help the squad pull back within one at 19-18. Following another CNU stoppage, Fellows chimed in with two key kills before Lacy unloaded another one to help the squad overcome its deficit and earn set point at 24-21. Although the Generals held on for one more rally, Jensen came through in the end as the senior standout drilled home a pass from Kidd to clinch a 25-22 victory.
With Washington & Lee showing some spunk in the first two sets, Christopher Newport found its footing in the third and took off. Kidd and Kolden both lined two early kills on the way to a 10-3 lead. Following a General timeout, Fellows and Lacy added a pair of blasts to extend CNU's advantage to 17-4 heading into another W&L break.
With an intimidating lead, the Captains refused to let the Generals back in the match. Fellows and Jensen both added a block and kill before
Brooke Moore smacked an ace to give the team a 22-7 lead. After a momentary miscue, CNU turned to Jensen, who fired a pair of bullets to give the squad set point at 24-8. On the very next rally, McIntyre uncorked her third ace of the match to seal the three-set victory with a 25-8 win in the final frame.
Fellows finished the contest with 10 kills and a .368 hitting percentage, while Kolden blasted eight winners and added five digs. On the defensive end,
Abby Hogge was exceptional as the three-time All-American notched 20 digs for the Captains.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday when the squad continues its four-game homestand against Randolph-Macon at 7 p.m. The following day, the Captains will host a USA South Tri-Match with LaGrange and Methodist. Action begins at noon.
